Get involved with Cities (and towns!) fit for cycling!

The Times campaign for towns and cities fit for safe cycling is moving on apace. There is scheduled to be a parliamentary debate on the campaign this coming Thursday (23rd February). So, if you are planning to add your name to the list of supporters or, better still, drop a note to your MP you'd be best to do so ASAP! We all want to be able to cycle safely don't we?

Save Our Cyclists!!

I was delighted - and frankly more than a little amazed to see that The Times have launched their own cycling safety campaign. Yesterday's front cover was emblazoned with "Save our Cyclists" and the faces of six British cycling Olympians supporting the cause. Very sadly, the impetus for starting the campaign was a serious accident outside The Times' offices between one of their reporters and a large lorry. That reporter, Mary Bowers, is still unconscious three months on. Her recovery, if and when it comes, will be a long and difficult one.

Two good reasons why cycling in the gutter is a bad idea!

We recently ran a “cyclist’s breakfast” event here in Barnstaple in conjunction with the council as part of International Car Free Day (http://www.worldcarfree.net/wcfd/). It was great to get to have a chat with lots of regular, and not-so-regular commuter cyclists.

Kids Love Cycling!

Interesting little piece from The Guardian here. Stats and product promotion aside, in my experience there is not much kids enjoy more than a good fun bike ride! http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/blog/2011/jul/21/modern-kids-want-ride-b...

Road Cycling With Children

Cycling with children on the roads is something many parents are concerned about – and often frankly don’t do really well from what I’ve seen! However, it’s not hard to do and can reap enormous benefits in terms of the cycling skills of your children as well as your own enjoyment of the bike ride. So, here are some top tips!

To Helmet or Not...

I recently read a report from a lawyer stating that the current legal precedent in the UK is that a helmet in useful in accidents of up to 12 miles an hour. Given that the average adult cyclist cycles at around 10 miles per hour this would indicate that helmets are only useful in accidents where there is no third party involved. i.e. the cyclist has just fallen off. Why, then, if cycle helmets are so ineffective are they worn by professional racing cyclists who move considerably faster than 10 miles per hour?

Welcome to my blog!

From my day job as a cycling instructor I spend much of my time training children on-road cycling skills. Children on the whole love getting out on their bikes and love it even more when Mum and Dad come too.

As a parent though I am also very aware of the practical difficulties involved in getting the whole family out together and that is the purpose of this blog.
