Exciting times here at Eos Cycling! Our very own Eric van der Horst has his first English language book published! The book, “Cycling in The Netherlands: The very best routes in a cyclist’s paradise” contains everything you need to know about cycling in The Netherlands as well as numerous routes to show you all the best bits that country has to offer.
You may know that The Netherlands is very flat (and therefore great for cycling!) but did you know that it has over 25,000 miles of cycling infrastructure – the vast majority of which is traffic-free. It’s a great location for families with children and I can pretty much guarantee that your kids will love the all the cycle paths with their own signage and road markings. The distances between locations are very short (The Netherlands being a small country) which keeps everybody interested and motivated to keep peddling! You’ll see lots of windmills and in the spring, lots of bulb fields too. Perhaps though you hadn’t considered the option of being weighed to check to see whether or not you are really a witch (and therefore light enough to fly on a broom!) at Oudekerk or thought perhaps of posing in traditional Dutch clothes in Volendam!
The Netherlands is a small country with a lot going on. History buffers right up against modernity and you get a ring-side seat from your very own saddle as everywhere is accessible by bike! If engineering is even just a passing interest, you will be amazed by the astonishing feats of engineering employed by the Dutch to control storm surges (at Rotterdam) which make the London flood barrier look like a child’s toy!
