From my day job as a cycling instructor I spend much of my time training children on-road cycling skills. Children on the whole love getting out on their bikes and love it even more when Mum and Dad come too.
As a parent though I am also very aware of the practical difficulties involved in getting the whole family out together and that is the purpose of this blog.
Here I intend to discuss issues related to cycling with children. I’ll look at bikes, handy accessories and equipment, logistics, traffic-handling, tips for cycling as a group, route planning, bike maintenance and much more. Everything in fact to help you and your family head out for fun and adventures on your bikes.
I welcome your feedback and comments – particularly those from other “Cycling Mamas”. Suggestions for future topics to be covered are also welcome.
Happy cycling!

Hi Cycling Mama,
Hi Cycling Mama,
My eight year old son has just learnt to ride, he’s fairly confident, but I’m a little wary of him cycling on the roads. Is it acceptable for him to cycle on the pavement until he gets a little more proficient, even though I’m aware it is not legal?

Well yes, you know it’s not
Well yes, you know it’s not legal and you or he could be liable for a fine! However, it would be a pretty mean policeperson to do that to an 8 year old! Have you investigated traffic-free routes in your area, by that I mean cycle paths and shared cycle and footpaths to help him get more cycling experience under his belt? Also, it would be good to review the routes your son would like to cycle, for example to school, from a cycling perspective. Are there alternative routes he could take that may be slightly longer than by car but would be on quieter roads? Maybe even with sections where he would get off and walk his bike on a certain stretch. Your town may also have cycle maps available to help you with this sort of route planning. Whatever you do though, cycle the route with him (with you behind him) until you and he are comfortable and confident that he knows what he is doing. Happy cycling!
